Further casting took place in early 2022, and filming lasted from late May to mid-July at Wilder Studios in Decatur, Georgia, as well as in El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico. It is the first live-action superhero film with a Latino lead.

There are several reasons the film didn't perform well at the box office, such as dwindling interest in DC heroes and the character's lack of popularity. However, a few reasons for Blue Beetle's poor performance could be foreshadowing other issues that Gunn will have a hard time escaping while building his universe.

Set in Fictional Palmera City, Blue Beetle follows Mexican-American Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), who just returned from college (he even shows his Gotham University hoodie in one scene), to his hometown. While trying to find a job, he accidentally gets in possession of an alien Scarab, which makes him a superhero.

Blue Beetle has a cheap kid's TV-movie look and feel most of the time. I enjoy the social commentary, some of the horror leanings, the film's anime action and some dialogue and character moments stand out. But beyond that, it's sadly, predictably, nothing especial.

Blue Beetle has grossed $129.2 million and rising at the worldwide box office, debuting with $25 million opening weekend and knocking the aforementioned Barbie off the top spot. It's now available on Digital and Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD.

Maridueña said as much in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We thought [staying true to the comic books] might hit hard for people in America and Mexico who understand that Texas kind of narrative, but we wanted the story to really transcend both the Mexican market and the American market.

While Miami and El Paso were inspirations for Palmera City — and both are known for thriving Latine communities — Soto was also able to to bring a bit of his own origin story to Blue Beetle by shooting the DCEU film in Puerto Rico.

What is known for certain is that the Scarab was buried with Kha-Ef-Re when he died, safe inside the Pharaoh's tomb. Over the centuries, thousands died attempting to claim it for their own, but the Scarab remained untouched, resting atop Kha-Ef-Re's sarcophagus.
